Description:
Within this module, the majority of these series of British Foreign Office files from The National Archives in the UK are general correspondence and registers from the 1830s and 1950s, composed namely by the British legation in Beijing, as well as British consulates based in more than 20 Chinese coastal and inland treaty ports, such as Canton, Chengtu, Chinkiang, Foochow, Hankow, Kunming, Macao, Taiwan, Tientsin, Tsingtao, and more. Also included are the private and semi-official correspondence of Sir Henry Pottinger, Sir John N. Jordan, and Lord Edmund Hammond. The collection provides a significant compendium of historical documents in English and forms an ideal complement to China and the Modern World: Imperial China and the West, Part I and II.
